We’ve had some gorgeous sunrises since we’ve been here at Anacortes Marina. This was one of the best.
We’re back at Anacortes Marina aboard Phoenix, but unfortunately not for cruising. Last week we received a text message with an attached photo from the woman who washes our boat when we’re gone. She said, “Look what I found when I came to wash your boat…hope no water got in…call me.” And the attached photo showed one of our cabin windows with shattered glass and a hole in the center!
On a recent trip to check things on our boat, the fresh snow on Mt. Baker really made the mountain stand out, especially on these cold and clear winter days. This shot is looking north from our marina across Fidalgo Bay.
We try to get back to Anacortes a couple of times during the winter to check our dock lines, make sure everything else is okay, and run the engine, genset, and other systems. Since it had been almost two months since we left the boat in early October, we were starting to look for an opportunity to head back to Anacortes before winter weather sets in and travel becomes more difficult. So, when we had some settled weather recently, we decided it was a good time for a trip north.
We had some really nice days in Anacortes before the fog set in, and on one of those days, we hiked to the top of Cap Sante. What wonderful views! This photo shows a boat on its way through the breakwater and entering Cap Sante Marina. The downtown area of Anacortes and surrounding residential areas are in the background.
We wrapped up our boating activities last week and have returned to Bend. We spent a little over a month in Anacortes working on boat maintenance and projects. We had hoped to be able to get the boat out to the islands for some late season cruising, but working on our projects took most of the time we had available to be away from home…plus we had about 10 days of really miserable weather and we had to take advantage of the good weather days to get our work done.
When we finished varnishing last week, we decided to head to the Brown Lantern Ale House for a couple of their great burgers and Mac & Jack’s African Amber Ale. Brown Lantern is one of our favorite places for a casual dinner in Anacortes.
When we’re staying on our boat at Anacortes Marina, we often don’t know when local events are scheduled. Partly because we live in Oregon, but also because we’re usually more focused on getting ready to take the boat somewhere and/or working on the boat and don’t pay attention. However, because we’re in walking distance of everything in town and along the waterfront, we often discover what’s going on by seeing things along our walks.

It was glassy calm and clear at o-dark-thirty this morning. The forecast calls for wind to fill in later in the day, but it sounds like there will be less wind in the San Juan Islands than in the Gulf Islands. Today might be a good day to get back to Anacortes.

One of the nice things about mooring our boat in Anacortes Marina is that we are in walking distance of all the stores and restaurants in downtown Anacortes. This gives us easy access to grocery stores, drug stores, hardware stores, marine stores…and also many good places to eat.
This summer we have had breakfast out at three downtown Anacortes restaurants: Mary Ann’s Kitchen, Adrift Restaurant, and Calico Cupboard Café and Bakery.
