Another Delay

We stow our kayak on the port foredeck when we take it along.

We got started early yesterday, with the intent of heading out on our cruise. It was cloudy and raining slightly, but the wind conditions looked good, and we got things ready to go. After breakfast, we went up to our storeroom and got the kayak to take along. The tide was on its way up, but the ramp wasn’t too steep yet, and we got the kayak down to the boat without incident, and stowed it on deck. Then, before we got underway, I decided to call our answering machine at home to pick up any messages. What a surprise!

When we cruise in British Columbia’s Gulf Islands and can work out the timing, we like to try to be in Ganges on a Saturday so we can take in a Salt Spring Island Saturday market. The market is held in Centennial Park in the heart of downtown Ganges, and offers a wonderful assortment of organic and locally produced foods, as well as a wide selection of arts and crafts.

September 14 – In Ganges

Once we were just outside the breakwater of Ganges Marina, we called them on VHF channel 66 to see if they had moorage available for us. They answered promptly, but put us “on hold” as there were several boats calling at the same time. Turned out that a local yacht club was having their annual get-together this weekend on the docks of Ganges Marina and many of their boats were arriving at the same time as we were. So much for the idea that the crowds “would be down.”

One of the nice things about mooring our boat in Anacortes Marina is that we are in walking distance of all the stores and restaurants in downtown Anacortes. This gives us easy access to grocery stores, drug stores, hardware stores, marine stores…and also many good places to eat.

This summer we have had breakfast out at three downtown Anacortes restaurants: Mary Ann’s Kitchen, Adrift Restaurant, and Calico Cupboard Café and Bakery.

Smoked salmon dinner

Smoked Copper River sockeye salmon on fresh salad greens made a wonderful dinner.

What a washout. Rain was forecast for today, and it pretty much rained all day. Not hard. Instead, the normal Seattle-style drizzle that kept things…and us…soggy all day long.

We got out our raincoats this morning and walked to the Saturday Anacortes Farmers Market, www.anacortesfarmersmarket.org. Fortunately, it wasn’t very windy, so all we had to contend with was the rain. We got cranberry and almond scones for breakfast, and fresh salad greens and olive bread for dinner tonight. We recently received a gift of smoked salmon from Ekhard, one of my friends from high school. He has a smoker and had smoked a bunch of freshly-caught Copper River sockeye salmon and was gracious enough to share some with us. So, dinner tonight will be smoked salmon pieces sprinkled on fresh greens tossed with balsamic vinaigrette dressing. Yum.

Jim’s project today was to get AC power up to the flybridge for the battery charger for the Superwinch battery. However, the wire-way between the main deck and the flybridge is already chock-a-block full with existing wiring! Spent most of the day trying to figure out what to do. Finally identified a possible workaround that we will try tomorrow.

By early evening, the rain stopped, and the sun poked out for about a half hour around 1800, which warmed things up so quickly that dense fog is forming all around us, reducing the visibility between Anacortes Marina and Cap Sante, extending out into Fidalgo Bay. We can hear foghorns out there, and the fog is closing in and getting thicker. Should be a very foggy night.
